Quatre musiciens internationaux, quatre personnalités uniques, un quatuor à cordes
Le Quatuor Barbican est encadré par Günter Pichler à l'Académie du quatuor à cordes Reina Sofia à Madrid, ainsi que par le Quatuor Ébène à la Hochschule für Musik de Munich. Il est guidé et soutenu par le Quatuor Belcea, Alasdair Tait, Andras Keller, David Waterman et Ferenc Rados.
La saison 2022/2023 est une période florissante pour le Quatuor Barbican qui enregistrera et publiera son premier CD et partira en tournée en Allemagne, en France, aux Pays-Bas, en Suisse, en Italie, au Canada et aux États-Unis.
L'année 2022 a été une année exceptionnelle pour le Quatuor, suite à la nomination d'un nouveau second violon, Kate Maloney. La connexion instantanée entre les quatre musiciens a conduit au développement d'une qualité de son distinctive et luxuriante qui a été rapidement reconnue par leurs mentors, le Quatuor Ébène et Günter Pichler.
La même année, le quatuor a remporté le premier prix du 71e Concours international de quatuor à cordes de l'ARD, ainsi que le prix spécial de la meilleure interprétation de l'œuvre commandée par Dobrinka Tabakova, le Prix spécial de la production du CD de Genuin Classics, le Prix GEWA et le Prix Henle Urtext. Cet incroyable succès fait suite au troisième prix remporté par le quatuor au Concours international de quatuors à cordes de Bordeaux en mai 2022.
Le quatuor a également remporté le premier prix du Concours international de musique de chambre Joseph Joachim 2019. En 2018, la Royal Philharmonic Society lui a décerné le Prix Albert et Eugenie FrostIlsque et il a remporté le Concours de musique de chambre St Martin in the Fields.
Le Quatuor Barbican a fait ses débuts au Wigmore Hall en 2017 grâce au Prix Maisie Lewis, il a été sélectionné en tant que jeunes artistes de St John Smith Square pour 2020 et a été artiste du Park Lane Group en 2016.
Le Quatuor Barbican s'est produit dans des festivals tels que le Peasmarsh Festival, Vibre ! Quatuors à Bordeaux, Zeister Muziekdagen, le Festival de musique de chambre de Montréal, IMS Prussia Cove et Aldeburgh. Leurs prestations ont été diffusées sur BR Klassik Radio, NPO Radio 4 et BBC Radio 3.
Le nom du Quatuor Barbican a une double signification. Une barbacane est un mur défensif entourant une ville ou un château, que le quatuor associe à sa quête de découverte, de développement et de poursuite de la tradition du quatuor à cordes. Le Quatuor Barbican est également profondément lié à Londres, puisque c'est là-bas, au Barbican Center, que le quatuor a donné son concert de fondation en 2015. Les membres fondateurs, Amarins, Christoph et Yoanna, se sont rencontrés à la Guildhall School of Music and Drama pendant leurs études, jouant d'abord de la musique de chambre ensemble pour le plaisir, avant de passer à une pratique plus sérieuse.
Le quatuor remercie le National Muziekinstrumenten Fonds pour le prêt d'un violon Guadagnini, joué par Amarins, et le Canimex Group Canada pour le violoncelle Gagliano de Yoanna et le violon Vincenzo Panormo de Kate.

Four international musicians, four unique personalities, one string quartet.
The Barbican quartet is mentored by Günter Pichler at the Reina Sofia String Quartet Academy in Madrid, as well as the Quatuor Ébène in Hochschule für Musik München. They are guided and supported by the Belcea Quartet, Alasdair Tait, Andras Keller, David Waterman and Ferenc Rados.
The 2022/2023 season is an exciting time for the Barbican Quartet, who will be recording and releasing their debut cd, and touring in Germany, France, Holland, Switzerland, Italy, Canada and the USA.
2022 has already been an outstanding year for the quartet, following the appointment of new second violinist, Kate Maloney in February. Instant connection between the four musicians led to the development of a distinct and luscious quality of sound, which was quickly recognized by their mentors the Quatuor Ébène and Günter Pichler.
A short 6 months later the quartet celebrated an outstanding first prize win at the 71st ARD International String Quartet Competition, also being awarded the special prize for Best Interpretation of the commissioned work by Dobrinka Tabakova, the Genuin Classics CD production special prize, the GEWA prize and the Henle Urtext prize. This incredible success follows the quartets third prize win at the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition in May 2022.
The quartet won the first prize at the 2019 Joseph Joachim International Chamber Music Competition as well as the 2018 St Martin in the Fields Chamber Music Competition.
They made their Wigmore Hall debut in 2017 thanks to the Maisie Lewis Award and in 2018 the Royal Philharmonic Society awarded them the Albert and Eugenie Frost Prize. The Barbican Quartet were selected as the St John Smith Square Young Artists for 2020 and were Park Lane Group artists in 2016.
The Barbican Quartet has appeared in festivals such as Peasmarsh Festival, Vibre! Quatuors à Bordeaux, Zeister Muziekdagen, Montreal Chamber Music Festival, IMS Prussia Cove and Aldeburgh. Their performances have been broadcast on BR Klassik Radio, NPO Radio 4 and BBC Radio 3.
The Barbican Quartet name has a dual meaning. A Barbican is a defensive wall surrounding a city or castle, which the quartet connects to their quest to discover, develop and continue the tradition of string quartet playing. The Barbican Quartet is also deeply connected to London, as it was here at the Barbican Center that the quartet had their founding concert in 2015. The founding members, Amarins, Christoph and Yoanna met at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama during their studies, first playing chamber music together for pleasure and later becoming more serious.
The quartet is very grateful to the National Muziekinstrumenten Fonds for the loan of a Guadagnini violin, played by Amarins and the Canimex Group Canada for Yoanna’s Gagliano cello and Kate’s Vincenzo Panormo violin.
